Me, Steph & Courtney |
It was during my break from school, so most of my day was spent lounging around the house in sweats and my hair stayed in bantu knots(my go-to style when I transitioning). I go in the kitchen on day, to see Courtney and our mom talking. “What are you doing to hair?” “Well, hello to you to mom” “ Sorry, baby.” So after I finish explaining what Bantu knots are, the jokes start up. I was Miss Celie from The Color Purple, I was Kizzy from Roots and any other character you could think of.
A few years ago Courtney was content with getting perms, now she was going natural. But why? What sparked her curiosity? So in Courtney most recent visit home, I got a chance to ask why she’s going natural, as I was doing her hair.

How old were you when you got your first perm?: There were a couple times Grannie tried but it didn’t take. Mom was completely against because of the constant up keep it required. But I was tried of wearing braids and ponytails, I wanted to wear my hair down. And didn’t like the hot comb because it took so long. So Grannie told me that if wanted to be able to wear my hear down I had to get it permed. I think I was like 6 or 7.
When do you plan to cut all your permed ends off?: I don’t know, maybe the summer.
Like many women, Courtney doesn’t remember her natural hair texture. She’s often told me that misses the “easiness” of permed hair. But I continue to remind her, that when you transition you have learn how to take care and style your hair over. You can’t do the same thing to your natural hair that you did to your permed hair. So Courtney if your reading this, PUT DOWN THE BLOW DRIER AND FLATIRON!!!!!lol Once you get the hang of it becomes second nature and won’t be such a hassle. Stay strong sis!!!!
Peace
Danielle
